Winter weather not only brings cooler temperatures, but less humidity in the air. After living through a humid summer in Alabama, this cooler weather probably seems like nothing short of a blessing. However, too little humidity in the air can also cause problems – such as dry mouth.
What is Dry Mouth?
Dry mouth occurs when the salivary glands do not produce enough saliva. Saliva is important for a variety of reasons. It lubricates the mouth and throat, breaks down food, aids in swallowing and even helps prevent cavities.
Why is dry mouth more prevalent in the winter? Dry winter air draws moisture out of everything – it’s why even skin feels drier during wintertime. We’re spending more time indoors with the heat on. It’s also the season for stuffy noses, meaning your child is often breathing through their mouth instead of their nose.
If your child is suffering from dry mouth, their symptoms may include:
- mild sore throat
- hoarse, raspy voice
- thick saliva
- difficulty chewing and swallowing
- bad breath
- dry tongue
How to Treat Dry Mouth
If you suspect your child has dry mouth, here are a few easy remedies to try:
- Encourage your child to drink more water.
- Give them sugar-free gum to chew, which increases saliva production.
- Use a humidifier in your home to put moisture back into the air.
- Avoid letting them drink caffeinated beverages, which can dehydrate.
