Do My Children Need Fluoride Treatments?

Fluoride is a dependable source for helping prevent tooth decay and cavities in adults and children. The American Dental Association says fluoride is nature’s cavity fighter because it helps rebuild weakened tooth enamel and reverses early signs of tooth decay. You can get fluoride from things you swallow, such as foods, beverages, and dietary supplements, it also can be applied topically for additional benefits.

There is a lot of misinformation about fluoride, so, below, please find our recommended tips for fluoride use.

Tips for Fluoride Use:

The American Dental Association recommends fluoride toothpaste be used in different amounts depending on a child’s age:

  • In children younger than 3 years, parents and caregivers should begin brushing teeth when they appear. Use a very small amount fluoride toothpaste. Experts recommend the size of one grain of rice.
  • For children 3 to 6 years of age, parents, and caregivers should dispense no more than a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
  • After age 6, children can use a fluoride toothpaste as the primary toothpaste that fills their toothbrush.
  • All children should brush at least twice a day.

Most communities have fluoride in their tap water. Fluorinated water provides a great systemic resource that aids in the prevention of tooth decay. Call your local water department to determine your community’s fluoride levels. The American Dental Association suggests the ratio of fluoride to water be at 0.7 parts per million. If your community doesn’t meet the recommended levels, talk to your dentist about prescribing a fluoride supplement.

For children, tooth decay and cavities are a red flag that not enough fluoride is being consumed or applied.  See your pediatric dentist every six months for cleanings unless it is recommended you visit more frequently.

Depending on a child’s likelihood to develop tooth decay, fluoride treatments may be administered every 3, 6 or 12 months. Medplex can advise you on whether this is a necessary treatment and the appropriate schedule for your child.
