The Latest on CBD Oil for Kids

The term “CBD” has generated quite the buzz in the media and in health care. But what exactly is it? CBD stands for Cannabidiol. Unlike marijuana, CBD does not list Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the ingredient most commonly referred to as causing a “high”. Both are naturally found in cannabis but separated to create their own unique products or combination products.

Recently, CBD has been marketed as an alternative and natural therapy for children experiencing everything from unresolved pain and seizure disorders to sleep issues or arthritis. Regulation for CBD therapy is also not widely established, so it’s especially important to be cautious if you plan to purchase it online or at a retail location. In addition, even though it is a natural therapy, it still can cause side effects, such as fatigue, diarrhea, appetite changes and more.

Even though long-term data is still not available, there are several studies showing positive results from the use of CBD oil in epilepsy, autism and anxiety. Please speak with your child’s pediatrician before giving your child any CBD products of any kind as there may also be interactions with other medications. We are happy to answer any of your questions on CBD use in pediatric dental appointments and refer you to the right resources, should you need additional information.
